I was setting up my dot after watching OpenAI’s DevDay a few days ago. The world is moving fast toward personal agents. Soon, we will all have agents handling daily admin and scheduling. On paper, that’s extremely convenient.
But I just got home from a nice dinner with a friend, who has always been so overwhelmingly enthusiastic about recommending restaurants for us to try. She saves every single restaurant she loves, Singapore or overseas. She remembers its best dishes and tells me we must go try them together! I’m not a foodie but I go because she chose it. There’s joy in experiencing a place your friend picks because she thinks you’d like it.
Very soon, this experience will disappear. As dots and personal agents gain traction, the places we go will be even more optimised. Even more than Google reviews already do. We will soon trade away the simple shared experience of trying another human’s recommendation, for the sake of a little convenience.
It’s a pity, isn’t it? But it’s not too late though. We just need to remain conscious of the choices we make, and how they shape our life experience. There’s hope that we can live in a manner that embraces AI without going overboard.
